Acne
Acne
Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that happens when the pores of the skin become clogged with sebum and more. Sebum—oil that helps keep skin from drying out—and dead skin cells plug the pores, which leads to outbreaks of lesions, commonly called pimples, zits or breakouts. Most often, the outbreaks occur on the face but can also appear on the back, chest, shoulders and other areas of the body.
Acne can be caused by a multitude of different factors including age, lifestyle and stress. Often acne is experienced in teenagers going through puberty but can and does affect those of all ages, backgrounds and skin types. For most people, acne tends to go away by the time they reach their thirties, but some people in their forties and fifties continue to have this skin problem.
Another common and debilitating side effect of acne is the scarring that remains after the breakouts have been controlled. Can scarring can form as discoloration like post inflammatory hyperpigmentation which is pigmented or brown spots and post inflammatory erythema which is a red mark left post breakout. More severe acne will often leave indentations (atrophic scarring) or raised scars (hypertrophic). Our treatment for active acne and acne scarring at the clinic often consists of targeted skincare, treatments which can include laser, needling and chemical peels – as well as doctor prescribed medications and/or medical referral to a Dermatologist if necessary.
